Random Piano Blog – June 2022

Today I realized I learn simpler music faster. I could finally read some music. Amazingly that reading music makes me somewhat dependent on the sheet instead of memory even if I could easily memorize this piece. I believe that is a good thing.

Last Christmas (George Michael) arrangement by Dietmar Steinhauer

This is probably the fastest I could learn a piece since I started almost 2 years ago. I realized I could read! And it took me about only a week to learn it. As a beginner pianist this is a level up for me. I had hard time with certain bar that required some arpeggios with 5 fingers but I think I’m getting close to making it easy. I need to practice more arpeggios when practicing scales. Anyway, I’m glad I know this piece now and now the matter of mastering the piece. Simple piece but melodiously buoyant.

Reprise (Joe Hishaishi) score book

This must continue. As I approached the second half of the piece things seem to get very hard. This piece arrangement is very hard in general. I have been on it for literally a year and I’m not anywhere near familiar with first half. My fingering is getting used to the first half but I’m pretty sure many of them are simply not optimal. Like other pieces I’ll fix it when I’m done learning.

Waltz in A Minor (Frederic Chopin)

I may not be a classical fan but this piece caught my head often. I decided I might as well learn this. The piece requires left hand jumps which is a technique that I’ll learn for the very first time. Also there are parts where right hand agility is required. I managed to learn first four bars – again, yet to master it. This piece will take a while as I am not prioritizing it.

Overall, I’m happy that my sightreading is improving.
