Action-adventure games are my favorite. I love to enjoy exploring the world in a game and smash enemies around with a sword and a shield, a hammer, or a spear. Yes, games with most control in player’s hand doing the hacking and slashing.
If you have been following my live channel, you may know that I love souls game and its variants. Mortal Shell, in my opinion, could be called into that category.
From the start of the game, you are (well not immediately) given a weapon that you can count on to cut your way through the end of the game.
Just like souls games, you start with a toon that’s probably weak at the beginning and you get to survive for a certain amount of progress before you can upgrade and be stronger. With a lot of challenges and deaths of course.
Compared to the other souls games, such as Dark Souls III, the pace of this game – I feel – is a little bit slower. Not much slower though. Mechanically, there is a very close similarity in how the toon swing their weapon and dodge the attacks.
Like what the title says, Mortal Shell is where you get to collect a “shell” of hero remains and it alters the characteristics of you toon. So, instead of switching armor, you’re using other shell as the armor. This is one such interesting concept. Not to spoil it too much.
The game world size is relatively small. There are a few areas to explore and complete. And, there is a limited number of shells to collect. Same thing for the weapons. In fact, this is what I like for this genre. A hero needs only be equipped with some exchangeable equipment sets and the rest is action!
Again, like many souls games out there, the story is pretty cryptic for me. You get pieces of information about what’s happening. And they are told in a very subtle way. But I get the gist of it. More or less. I think.
Anyway, love the gameplay. Oh yeah, the game is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows. Happy slashing.
